Cut-Off Lows over South Africa: A Review

چکیده

Every year, cut-off low (COL) pressure systems produce severe weather conditions and heavy rainfall, often leading to flooding, devastation disruption of socio-economic activities in South Africa. COLs are defined as cold-cored synoptic-scale mid-tropospheric low-pressure which occur the mid-latitudes cause persistent rainfall. As they throughout these important rainfall producing that also associated with extreme cold snowfalls. An in-depth review is critical due their high impacts affect some parts country regularly, affecting lives livelihoods. Here, we provide a comprehensive literature on over African domain, whilst comparing them Southern Hemisphere counterparts occurring America Australia. We focus occurrence, development, propagation, dynamical processes society environment. seek understand stratospheric–tropospheric exchanges resulting from tropopause folding during occurrence COLs. Sometimes, may extend surface, creating conducive floods Africa, especially when impinged coastal escarpment. The slow propagation appears be largely modulated by quasi-stationary high-pressure system downstream acting blocking system. reviewed two COL events occurred south east coasts found both cases, interactions low-level flow escarpment enhanced lifting deep convection. It was determined several numerical prediction models struggle placement amounts COLs, near coast interior plateau. Our study provides single most treatise deals characteristics domain.

Identification and climatology of cut-off lows near the tropopause.

Cut-off low pressure systems (COLs) are defined as closed lows in the upper troposphere that have become completely detached from the main westerly current. These slow-moving systems often affect the weather conditions at the earth's surface and also work as a mechanism of mass transfer between the stratosphere and the troposphere, playing a significant role in the net flow of tropospheric ozon...

Variation of ionospheric slab thickness over South Africa

Ionospheric slab thickness is defined as the ratio of TEC to maximum electron density of the F-region (NmF2), proportional to the square of the F2-layer critical frequency (foF2). It is an important parameter in that it is linearly correlated with scale height of the ionosphere, which is related to electron density profile. It also reflects variation of the neutral temperature. Therefore, ionos...

Defining Obesity Cut-Off Points for Migrant South Asians

BACKGROUND Body mass index (BMI) and waist circumference (WC) are used to define cardiovascular and type 2 diabetes risk. We aimed to derive appropriate BMI and WC obesity cut-off points in a migrant South Asian population. METHODS 4688 White Europeans and 1333 South Asians resident in the UK aged 40-75 years inclusive were screened for type 2 diabetes. Principal components analysis was used ...

Theileriosis in South Africa: a brief review

East Coast fever caused by Theileria parva parva has been eradicated from South Africa, but tick-borne infections with other species of Theileria still occur, particularly in cattle and African buffalo (Syncerus caffer). One such infection is Corridor disease caused by T. parva lawrencei, which is controlled by restricting the movement of African buffalo. Other species reviewed are T. parva bov...
